Authoritarian governments, organised crime, billionaire tech platforms and powerful individuals increasingly have the money, reach and legal firepower to challenge those who investigate them. At the same time, disinformation spreads at unprecedented speed and trust in traditional media has fractured.
What does it take to expose wrongdoing in this environment, and what happens when journalists themselves become the target?
Former BBC HARDtalk presenter Stephen Sackur joins investigative journalist Carole Cadwalladr to examine what it takes to hold power to account today.
From Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers to Alexei Navalny’s investigations into Russian corruption and Daphne Caruana Galizia’s reporting in Malta, Sackur looks at those who risked everything to expose the truth. Cadwalladr brings her own experience investigating Cambridge Analytica and the influence of technology and data on democratic politics, and the legal battles that followed.
