About the event
In October 2023, Humza Yousaf was Scotland’s First Minister when his wife’s parents became trapped in Gaza. As Israel launched its military response to the Hamas attacks of 7 October, Yousaf was trying to get his family to safety while leading Scotland through the political and social consequences of the escalating conflict.
The mass killing and displacement of Palestinians, widespread destruction in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis have put allegations of genocide, international law and accountability at the centre of global debate.
In Britain, Palestine has become one of the most contested issues in public life, reshaping political debate, bringing hundreds of thousands onto the streets and seeing protesters and activists arrested amid an increasingly fraught debate over protest, free speech and the limits of political expression.
